View Full Version : Runescape Discussion
Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb and post this. I have a good bit of faith that the community we have here can handle this subject a lot better than most.
Try to take into considerations other arguments. We've all heard 'Runescape sucks' and 'Runescape is the best game ever', but it's so hard to find a decent bit of balanced opinion regarding the game. Explain your points if you can, with examples.
Heck, I apologize for even laying down rules, you should be able to police yourselves. Play nice.
After much ado, I'll get the ball rolling.
I've played the game. I put in a few hours on and off to see what it has to offer, and I have a feeling I'm missing something. Save for the tutorial, I'm fairly lost as to progressing the story to where I can join groups for things and whatnot, assuming you can.
I'm also slightly confused as to how the skills tab has around five skills for combat, and around twenty that are apparently completely focused on making money. Diablo 2, in comparison, has one level. It was your 'Killing stuff' level. I -liked- Diablo 2.
I assume that the reason the combat is so droll is because of my low level, but I don't know. I've never seen anyone actually use impressive special attacks in combat, most battles having about as much player interaction as Progress Quest. Does the game introduce interesting elements to combat once you hit a certain level?
I'm waiting for the game to impress me, as with most MMORPG's. Does the gameplay ever improve, or is the objective of the game simply to increase statistics and gain money?

People play RuneScape because they want to increase stats and gain money (grinding).
That's the objective of RuneScape besides the myriad quests.
Is there any group play, then? If there isn't, then what's the point of making it an MMO? Other than to have to sit and trade and to flaunt your eventually grinded success to other people who have seen it a hundred times before?

Not to take this way off-topic, but if anyone wants to try an MMO with good graphics, a slightly deeper story and something more updated try Shaiya online. It's free and similar to WoW. I just discovered it and it won awards for 2007. It's still fairly new so I thought the news might benefit some people.

A main aspect of MMO's is to feel like you've accomplished something, does it feel better to sit alone when you beat a quest, or does it help to tell people your acomplishments? This is the main pull with Most MMO's, and a good (Not focusing on runescape, theirs are terrible) community can overshadow a crappy game.
I personaly do not think RS should be yelled at and called "GAY GAY GAY", It's a huge feat. Remember how many players they got hooked on this? It was a amazing feat, the first few years, but now they have fallen into some Dysentry, sadly.

Hmm, I tried out Runescape about 3-4 years back.
Played it for about 30 minutes and haven't attempted to play it again since, I can remember Chris publishing an article about a major graphic overhall a few months back...
Might be swayed to check it out again if someone has something positive to say about it.

I tried it around a year ago and it sucked hard. I'd rather play a text based RPG.
Wow...That's pretty poor. I really had hopes of a group of ten people dashing around slaying dragons, not being able to shout about having spent months grinding when I know there will always be people with much better stats and items than me.
I assume any hopes I had of a storyline will be squashed, too? No giant bosses? No real quests other than the normal fetch/hunt/kill ones?

No storyline exept be a "Pure" or whatever. The RS world is judged by them.

The point is to get cussed out by random users, but actually I have RuneScape spells I played for about a year and stopped then came back after about a 7 month hiatus now I'm not playing it anymore and so the cycle goes on... And on.
For the time I was playing I was grinding/farming/trying to find quick ways to make money, (Just like real-life!) so I started cutting a sort of good tree known as Willows people at the time payed 30 coins a piece which was a lot to a n00b that couldn't get 30 coins over a minute, I could grind for hours getting 1k of these pieces of wood and get pretty good money.
(Now looking back I don't understand why people find this fun, but nevertheless I would still do it, even now I would.) Now as I was grinding I couldn't help but spam people's chats and such, after the spamming I would eventually discuss stuff with people and makes friends, sadly they'd leave and I'd be alone but for the short time I was playing I would grind and cut down trees with friends (I made more. :P) getting to know them better and stuff it was actually fun when I started getting to grind with other people if you can't make friends on that game and grind/train with other people there is no play value at all.
Right now I'm actuall neutral on the subject but when I start playing again I'll be liking it, but like KoL I haven't picked that game back up yet and probably never will now because they deleted my account.

Runescape was fun back in the day before the update. I've haven't played it about 3 years.
To stop playing (this funny) I dropped all my stuff on each character, created random passwords (on Word) and copy and pasted them. Haven't played or made a new character since.

I played RS for 5 years. I'm level 120 with the name Curse. It was neat... then. It feels more and more geared to the middle school early high school aged people with some of its "safe" updates like no wildy etc. Yes i know they've come out with new Pking but.. thats not real pking.
Jagex has 2 more MMORPGS coming out. one this year (2009) called mechscape and then another in 2010 or 2011 which will be item mall. I may try those but for me RS was fashionable...was. It just doesn't hold my attention anymore, its all grinding.

I really dont like games that are just made for grinding. Whats the point when you can't grind anymore?

I wasted 2 years of my life playing this game. Its fun, but do your best not to get addicted.

Haha i loved this game. I remember back in Intermediate School (you americans might call it something else, everyone was like 12-13 years old) Practically every boy in the school had either played/ or did play RS. Basically "cool" status was acheived by how good you were on RS.
(Or how far youve gotten with a girl) But rs was fun but then the phase wore of when people started turning like 15/16 years old. But a few people from High School i know i still play, and one i know is even a GM.
(i dont think she ever got over the runescape phase)

I used to be into it when I was younger, but I grew out of it. They never really added any depth to the game.....
In fact, they've taken most of the good stuff out.

The game is really out dated. The only few that play the game now are very low on the money budget and find its grind addicting. I actually thing the game is lame and too much like UO. The past is behind me and the future isn't looking to bright for Runescape if they continue to keep it on a 2d level. For what it is the game is semi fun, however the gameplay gets old fast. I found wow more more enjoyable, tho it has its drop offs at times.

Well to admit it I play it.
And by play it i mean log on during the holidays to get a holiday item, show off old holiday items in a crowded town until people start asking me what it is. At this point I ignore then until they get angry and by that time I log off and go do something productive.
It wastes some time I guess.

Look at it this way, if you don't have;
A console
A decent computer
Friends
Runescape is the game for you, you don't need anything fantastic hell i played it when 56k was only available. It is constantly updated and for people who like it all the new quests keeps them hooked.
